Things to Remember on Your Wedding Day When Things Don’t Go As Planned
We know. Your wedding is the most important day of your life. It needs to be perfect. At Mountainside Events, we do everything we can to ensure your wedding day goes smoothly. But as much as we plan and schedule and confirm all the details, there are some things we simply can’t control.
Take Kaitlyn and James, for example. They were a 2020 Mountainside Events couple whose wedding did not go as planned on many accounts. Not only were we fighting two different fires in Estes Park the week of their wedding, but we also had to navigate evolving COVID restrictions, fire safety, and adverse weather. Talk about a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, their wedding didn’t go up in flames. In fact, it turned out to be just as spectacular as they could have imagined. Because even when things don’t go as planned on your wedding day, there are 5 things to remember for your wedding day to ensure it is still everything you’ve dreamed of and more.
When Things Don’t Go as Planned on Your Wedding Day…
1. Prepare Yourself Ahead of Time
Nobody’s wedding day is perfect. Whether you like it or not, there will most likely be surprises––maybe some good ones and maybe some tough ones. The best thing you can do is prepare yourself and expect the unexpected. If nothing unexpected happens, great! But if something does, then you are already prepared to handle it and not let it completely ruin your most important day.
You get to decide how you will navigate both the good and bad surprises that arise on and around your wedding day. From family members being unable or unwilling to travel due to COVID to a random thunderstorm looking to make an appearance at your outdoor wedding, you get to decide to stay positive.
2. Stay Calm and Breathe
When things don’t go as planned on your wedding day, try to stay calm. As you work with your wedding vendors, friends, and family to try to resolve whatever issue arises, it’s going to go over much better if everyone takes a few deep breaths and works together. Of course, it is ok to be upset or disappointed, but try to move past these feelings as quickly as possible so you can still enjoy your wedding day!
3. Lean on Your Wedding Planner
Your wedding planner is your best resource when your wedding plans don’t go as planned. From communicating and coordinating with your other wedding vendors to helping you come up with a Plan B, C, D, or E (if needed), they are on your side, ready to do whatever it takes to make sure your wedding is as perfect as can be for you.
At Mountainside Events, we know how important your wedding day is. That’s why we are proactive when it comes to having a backup plan in place. When COVID started affecting our couples’ wedding plans, we worked tirelessly to help them renegotiate their vendor contracts, reschedule their weddings if needed, or adjust and scale back their wedding so it was possible to have it on their chosen date. No matter what comes our way, we are dedicated to making your celebration wonderful.
4. Remember What’s Most Important
There are many things to remember for your wedding day. But when everything seems to be going wrong with your wedding, it can be hard to stay positive and focus on what really matters. If you’re experiencing this right now, here are two things you can choose to be grateful for:
Having some of your closest family and friends with you on your wedding day (even if some are joining virtually)
Getting to marry the love of your life (whether it looks exactly the way you imagined it would or not)
When it comes down to it, those two things are way more important than if the wrong color table cloths are delivered, or your guests might get a little wet from a flash rainstorm.
5. Laugh it Off and Make the Most of It
Humor is a powerful thing. When things don’t go as planned on your wedding day, try to laugh it off, adjust, and make the most of your new reality. Because the truth is, you can’t control the weather or if an unexpected guest shows up at your wedding. Even when these things happen, your wedding day can still be amazing. You just have to find the silver lining and choose to enjoy your day anyway.
For Kaitlyn and James’ wedding, navigating the large wildfires in Colorado was not ideal, but we made the best of it. First, we made sure the wedding venue was a safe distance away from danger and were prepared to move should the risk level change. Second, we incorporated what was happening in the natural surroundings into the wedding. And personally, we think their smoky wedding photos turned out quite beautifully.
